Title: Rivers of Living Water

Text: John 7:37-43

Key Verse: John 7:38

Introduction: It should not be overlooked that in John 7:38, Jesus refers to “rivers” (plural) of “living” (as opposed to dead) water that will “flow” (not stagnate) from the “belly” (innermost being) of the believer.

Proposition: Three ways in which the Holy Spirit, the 3rd person of the Triune God, is like “Rivers of Living Water.”

I.) The Holy Spirit is Awesome in Flow- Isaiah 12:1-6

Note: Consider the majestic Missouri & mighty Mississippi Rivers.

A. By awesome, that which is comforting -v. 1

B. By awesome, that which is powerful -v. 2

C. By awesome, that which is joyful -v. 3

II.) The Holy Spirit is Full (deep & wide) – Isaiah 11:1-2

A. Full of purity- James 3:17

1. Clean water – 1 Thessalonians 4:7 (For God has not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. Holy: Set apart, different).

2. Sweet water – James 3:8-11

B. Full of truth – John 16:13-14

1. Guiding truth -v. 13

2. Glorifying Christ -v. 14 (I am the way; truth).

III.) The Holy Spirit has a Source- John 14:11, 26

A. Likened unto the wind- John 3:8 (See, feel the effects; like a spring).

B. Likened unto the ocean- Romans 11:33-36

Conclusion: The picture of the Holy Spirit’s influence in the life of the believer is overwhelming; springing forth and flowing day by day, in order to fulfill God’s purposes. Therefore, let us “be filled with the Holy Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18).
